Edwardian Sterling Silver Faith, Hope, Charity "Sweetheart Brooch"
Edwardian Sterling Silver Faith, Hope, Charity "Sweetheart Brooch"
This British Hallmarked Edwardian era brooch is very unique in it’s sweetness. Traditionally “Sweetheart Brooches” were given to women when their partners or spouses, who were soldiers, went off to war, shipped out to sea, or traveled by train, as a token, or romantic keepsake, to honor their loved one while away. Most popular from the late 1880’s until about 1918, they traditionally mimicked the shape and size of military medals yet depicted softer imagery, incorporating hearts, vines, flowers, anchors and birds, (most often everyday, ordinary things). This particular brooch, with it’s double heart, “faith, hope & charity” symbolism (the cross for faith, the heart for charity and the anchor for hope) delicate dotted edge, hand engraved floral design detail and small leaves, is a very unique combination and one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
